overview
What did Jane Austen truly look like, and what can her portrait tell us about identity and society in 18th-century Britain?
Portraits of this era were far more than mere likenesses; they were meticulously arranged tableaux that showcased status, intellect and virtue. During a period when Britain’s increasing wealth and changing social structures fueled a desire for self-representation, artists like Thomas Gainsborough created refined canvases, while Angelica Kauffmann's allegorical works highlighted fashion as a potent form of visual communication.
Join Anne Harbers for a fascinating look at how costume communicates character in both portraiture and prose – and how Jane Austen’s image continues to invite reading between the lines.
